Blue Tier Descent

Key Statistics

Distance
29km
Duration
Single Day
Time (hrs)
3-5 hours

Without wanting to sound biased, if anyone asked me to rank my favourite tracks in Tasmania, the first one I’d write down is the Blue Tier Descent.

You can attack this trail in several different ways, and there’s a number of other worthwhile places to explore in the nearby area if you know where to look, but at the heart of this track is 11km of gorgeous trails connecting the deserted town of Poimena and Weldborough.

The trail isn’t for the faint hearted, and inexperienced, but those who have a moderate level of riding skills will find some great technical riding amongst some beautiful forest and heathlands.Go there.

Kingston - Kaoota Tramway Circuit

Key Statistics

Distance
45km
Duration
Single Day
Time (hrs)
3-5 hours

Connecting together some of the most accessible off-road riding trails around Kingston, this loop is a great way to discover some trails close to Hobart and plant the seed for further exploration.
There are plenty of great views, beautiful, quiet trails, with a bit of technical fun, and even a bit of history all thrown in. Cap this off with a great downhill run at the end to take you home.  This is one of my favourite rides close to Hobart.

Tarkine Adventures

Key Statistics

Distance
12km
Duration
Single Day
Time (hrs)
1-1.5 hours

Way off in the North West of the State at the Tarkine Adventures site is 13kms of custom built, IMBA standard, mountain bike trails for the cycling connoisseur.
Broken up into three successive loops of increasing difficulty, there's something here for everyone, and the trails really do provide a technical challenge when you get into the black section, and some beautiful forest throughout.
However, a word of warning: I last visited in January 2010 expecting to ride groomed trails of superb standard, instead I found myself on some extremely poorly maintained track, with branches and trees down everywhere, and some of them had been down for a loonnngggg time which was a real disappointment.  Oh, and whilst it is free to access the trails, there's no bike hire on site.

Maria Island

Key Statistics

Distance
Day 1 - 40km, Day 2 - 15km
Duration
Multi-Day (Tour)

Maria Island makes for a great overnight cycling trip, allowing you a chance to not only explore the more commonly visited sites on the Northern Island, but also a chance to head down to the much less visited Southern Island, and spend a wonderful night at Encampment Cove.
The route described below sets aside the first day for a leisurely exploration of the Southern end of the Island on the first day, overnight camping at Encampment Cove, and then a walk up Mt Maria and exploration of the more visited Northern end of the Island on the second day.  However, once on the Island, you can mix and match the rides to your own liking.
Maria Island has an amazing abundance of wildlife, so it can be worth taking a good torch for a bit of a night time look around.

Adamsfield Circuit

Key Statistics

Distance
36km
Duration
Single Day
Time (hrs)
3-5 hours

This ride follows a 4WD track over the back of the Saw Back Range to the old mining town of Adamsfield and then back out again along Clear View Road.

It combines some fun, technical riding (and yes, a bit of pushing) as you climb up and descend along saw back track to Adamsfield, then you can enjoy a bit of fossicking before a much easier return route via Clear Hill Road.

Pipeline Track

Key Statistics

Distance
24km
Duration
Single Day
Time (hrs)
1.5-3 hours

This has to be one of the easiest and best mountain bike trails near Hobart for those just wanting to go for a social cruise or family ride.
It follows the water pipe from Fern Tree out to near its start at the Wellington Fall weir 12kms away.  The ride itself is very scenic including some lovely bush sections and ending with increasingly great views out to Cathedral Rock on your left, and has plenty of places to explore along the way including silver and Wellington falls.
The route imperceptibly gains about 200 metres in height on its way out towards the weir, making the return ride particularly pleasurable and easy.

Tangara Trail

Key Statistics

Distance
47km: 35km (Southern Loop) + 17km (Northern Loop)
Duration
Single Day
Time (hrs)
3-5 hours

The Tangara Trail is an almost invisible web of interconnecting trails between Seven Mile Beach and South Arm.  It often weaves between property boundaries and heads along quiet rides as it wends its way through beaches, bush and sandy trails.  The trail is manageable for most cyclists and of course if you print off the free map from the website, you can ride as far or as little as you want.
The route described below knits together some of the best sections of the trail, but throws in a few extra bits as well to make a nice figure of eight ride that will give even the most experienced cyclist a good day out.

Montezuma Falls

Key Statistics

Distance
55km (shorter options possible)
Duration
Single Day
Time (hrs)
4-6 hours

If you're heading over to the West Coast, then this would have to be the number one ride on your agenda.  The route follows an old railway line through some beautiful forests to the 114m Montezuma Falls.  The route can be broken into a number of sections from a short (11km) out and back ride along a gentle, easy to ride trail from the Northern end of the track though to a 55km out and back epic starting and ending in Zeehan.

The core of the ride is the 14km section (each way) from Melba Flats to Montezuma Falls where you'll get to play in the mud, race 4WD's, plunge through deep washouts and really get some serious mountain biking in.  Finally, for the well prepared and adventurous the final 8kms from Melba Flats to Zeehan crosses through button grass plains providing expansive views which you'll have plenty of time to enjoy as you push, bash and swim your bike along what was once a railway line.

North South Track (Mt Wellington)

Key Statistics

Distance
23kms
Duration
Single Day
Time (hrs)
1-2 hours

The North-South Track is a shared use track for mountain bikers and bushwalkers on the flanks of Mt Wellington, and if you're only able to ride one track on Mt Wellington, this would be a good option.

The actual North South track goes roughly downhill from the Springs, and has a combination of twisting turns, great lines, good challenges and it's all set to a surprisingly scenic backgrop. One minute you can be looking down over most of Hobart, the next you can feel a world away.

The route described here also includes connecting sections to get you onto the track from the Glenorchy Mountain Bike Park and a bit of a loop down Radfords Track, which is a fun descent.

This little ride will definitely introduce you to some of Hobart’s best riding.

Pelverata Falls (Snug Tiers)

Key Statistics

Distance
12km (6km each way)
Duration
Single Day
Time (hrs)
1-3 hours

The ride out to the top of Pelverata Falls is a fun ride, with lots of big puddles and rocky sections to navigate through.

It is probably more for local riders looking for a short bit of technical riding with some nice views at the end.  However it can also make a great day out for less experienced riders (just so long as you are willing to walk your bike a bit) and there are plenty of options to extend this ride for those looking for more hours in the saddle.

I last rode this ride during a bit of a snow dump and it was absolutely magical fun.
