The Meehan Ranges on the outskirts of Hobart contains a complex network of tracks and trails heading up over the Meehan Ranges which make a great playground for beginner through to advanced riders.  The best way to discover these trails is with someone who already knows them, or just download the GPX files and go exploring. The Hobart MTB Rides facebook group is a good group to find some riding buddies.

The North-South Track is some of Hobart's best riding, and if you're only able to ride one track on Mt Wellington, this would be a good option.

The epic way to do the North South track is to get a lift up to the Springs and then just enjoy the run down.  The route has a combination of twisting turns, great lines, good challenges and it's all backed up with a gorgeous riding backdrop. One minute you can be looking down over most of Hobart, the next you can feel a world away.

The route described here assumes you've got to ride up as well, so includes connecting sections to get you onto the track from the Glenorchy Mountain Bike Park and a bit of a loop down Radfords Track, which is a fun descent.

The ride out to the top of Pelverata Falls is a fun, but at times challenging, ride with lots of big puddles and rocky sections to navigate through.

It is probably more for local riders looking for a short bit of technical riding with some nice views at the end.  However it can also make a great day out for less experienced riders (just so long as you are willing to walk your bike a bit) and there are plenty of options to extend this ride for those looking for more hours in the saddle.

Also a great winter option near hobart for those thinking of a ride in the snow.

Fern Tree, Mount Wellington

This has to be one of the easiest and best mountain bike trails near Hobart for those just wanting to go for a social cruise or family ride.

It follows the water pipe from Fern Tree out to near its start at the Wellington Fall weir 12kms away. The ride itself is very scenic including some lovely bush sections and ending with increasingly great views out to Cathedral Rock on your left, and has plenty of places to explore along the way including silver and Wellington falls.

The route imperceptibly gains about 200 metres in height on its way out towards the weir, making the return ride particularly pleasurable and easy.

This route is mainly on gravel roads, but don't let that put you off as there's some great highlights along the way including a beautiful section of old trail running up along the Huon River which will have those who don't mind getting wet and muddy grinning from ear to ear.  Add to this a trip past the once controversial Southwood site, a visit to Glovers Bluff, a walk out to Reuben Falls and of course starting and finishing at the Tahune Airwalk ... This is a good day out.

Risdon Vale Sports Ground (Car Park)

The Risdon Vale Trail is a short 2km XC loop built as part of a local initiative by the Risdon Vale Bike Collective and Blue Hill Trails. As it was built by young locals (under the guidance of a professional trail builder) it is a pretty solid achievement.  Time has taken it's toll however, and this is probably more a trail for local riders looking for some new trails or, rather than interstate or visiting riders. The Bike Park is pretty impressive and incorporates dirt jumps and a pump track

This ride ties together a couple of out and back rides to Grey Mountain and Pelverata Falls into a loop of sorts.   It is probably more for adventurous local riders who don't mind some rough tracks and who are looking for a short bit of technical riding with some nice views at the end.
However it can also make a great day out for less experienced riders just so long as you are willing to walk your bike a bit.  There are plenty of options to extend or shorten this ride for those looking for more or less hours in the saddle.

The Tangara Trail is an almost invisible web of interconnecting trails between Seven Mile Beach and South Arm.  It often weaves between property boundaries and heads along quiet roads, beaches and bush trails.  There is good tangara trail signage all over the area, so with a bit of help from the website and a sense of adventure you really could just go trail chasing.

The route described here knits together some of the best sections of the trail, but throws in a few extra bits as well to make a nice figure of eight ride that will give even the most experienced cyclist a good day out.
