North South Track (Mt Wellington)

The North-South Track is some of Hobart's best riding, and if you're only able to ride one track on Mt Wellington, this would be a good option.

The epic way to do the North South track is to get a lift up to the Springs and then just enjoy the run down.  The route has a combination of twisting turns, great lines, good challenges and it's all backed up with a gorgeous riding backdrop. One minute you can be looking down over most of Hobart, the next you can feel a world away.

The route described here assumes you've got to ride up as well, so includes connecting sections to get you onto the track from the Glenorchy Mountain Bike Park and a bit of a loop down Radfords Track, which is a fun descent.

Weldborough

One of the original mountain biking trails in the Blue Tier area (and now largely superceded by the new Blue Tier trail built as part of the Blue Derby network) you can ride the Blue Tier descent in several different ways, but at its heart the descent consists of 11km of old school technical trails connecting the deserted town of Poimena and Weldborough

The trail isn’t for the faint hearted, and inexperienced, but those who have a good level of riding skills will find some great technical riding amongst some beautiful forest and heathlands.

The Meehan Ranges on the outskirts of Hobart contains a complex network of tracks and trails heading up over the Meehan Ranges which make a great playground for beginner through to advanced riders.  The best way to discover these trails is with someone who already knows them, or just download the GPX files and go exploring. The Hobart MTB Rides facebook group is a good group to find some riding buddies.

Hollybank Reserve (Juggernaut)
MTB

Key Statistics

Distance
5 - 30kms
Duration
Single Day
Time (hrs)
1-4 hours
With 20kms of dedicated mountain bike trails, plus a skills area featuring Australia's biggest pump track and a jump track, Hollybank, just 20 minutes outside of Launceston, offers a lot for mountain bikers in Tasmania.

Hollybank offers a 4.5km easy 'green' trail which basically circles the reserve, and off this there is another 3.6km intermediate 'blue' grade circuit.  Finally, for those who are really here to ride, there's a 10km descent (the Juggernaut) with the option of the double-black diamond "Ginger Ridge" and "Reverb" tracks near the top.

Juggernaut is unlike anything else we've got to ride in Tasmania at the moment, and for those who can put a shuffle together and who like rollers, jumps, drops, rocks and their downhill fun then they are going to find this track their own little bit of paradise.

Fern Tree, Mount Wellington

This has to be one of the easiest and best mountain bike trails near Hobart for those just wanting to go for a social cruise or family ride.

It follows the water pipe from Fern Tree out to near its start at the Wellington Fall weir 12kms away. The ride itself is very scenic including some lovely bush sections and ending with increasingly great views out to Cathedral Rock on your left, and has plenty of places to explore along the way including silver and Wellington falls.

The route imperceptibly gains about 200 metres in height on its way out towards the weir, making the return ride particularly pleasurable and easy.

This route heads out from Derby to the top of Rattler Hill, before heading back down again on some crazy steep descents, flowing trails and challenging single track.  The best time to ride this route is as part of the Blue Dragon Race when the trails are well marked and cleared, but for those who want to take it at a more leisurely pace, anytime of year is good to ride this trail.  This ride is challenging and you'll climb a total of 1,600 metres (broken up in many stages) over its 53kms, but it is worth it, with great riding, lovely forest and river sections, a possible detour out to Mount Paris Dam and great views from the top of Rattlers Hill as its reward.

This 26km rail trail follows an abandoned railway line between Scottsdale and Billycock Hill weaving its way through lovely farmland and a bit of Scottsdale industry for the first 10kms and then some amazing cuttings and forests as it winds its way up Billycock Hill for the final 16km. With occasional glimpses out over the valley below, and a bit of well interpreted history lying on the side of the track this trail makes a great ride from those just looking to do a few kilometres with the kids through to those willing to tackle the full length out and back.

The Clarence Mountain bike park is less than 10 minutes by car out of Hobart and has largely become part of the greater Meehan Ranges trail network.  It is however still a worthy place to come and ride by itself with the 7km cross country trail providing a superb challenge for fit-intermediate riders and above.  For the rest of us mere mortals this park contains switchbacks that are sharp, steep and fairly unforgiving.  If you're not sure of your skills I'd recommend the Glenorchy Mountain Bike Park over Clarence, but if you're up for the challenge … well here it is.

Hidden away in the hills above Launceston, The Trevallyn Nature Recreation Area now has one of the newest and nicest sections of purpose built single track in Tasmania.   With 8kms of dedicated single track stretching from the Gorge Road to the Hoo Hoo hut, this is where you're inevitably going to start any play in the park, however if you're a little more adventurous and have a little more time, then don't overlook the other multiple use trails in the reserve.  There's kilometres of trails out there for those looking for a more old school Tasmanian experience.

Connecting together some of the most accessible off-road riding trails around Kingston, this loop is a great way to discover some trails close to Hobart and plant the seed for further exploration.
There are plenty of great views, beautiful, quiet trails, with a bit of technical fun, and even a bit of history all thrown in. Cap this off with a great downhill run at the end to take you home.  This is one of my favourite rides close to Hobart.
