Cyclist killed in Kingston

A cyclist in his 50's was killed on his early morning ride at Kingston on the morning of February 21, 2022.

News reports say that he was coming down Osborne Esplanade at the south end of the beach when he came off his bike and was hit by an oncoming car.

For reasons yet to be determined the cyclist separated from his bike and collided with the front of a motor vehicle travelling in the opposite direction. Speed and alcohol were not considered to be factors in the crash, though gravel from recent roadworks was being looked into.

Cycling deaths on Tasmanian roads are not common in Tasmania, with the Australia Road Deaths Database (extracted February 2022) reporting 39 cyclist deaths on Tasmanian roads in the 34 years since 1989 when they first started reporting number.  This is from a total of 1,563 deaths on our roads since that time.

Thirty nine deaths is still too many, so stay safe out there.
