Railton - Sheffield Railway Line

Key Statistics

Distance
24km return
Grade
Duration
Single Day
Time (hrs)
2-4 hours

This short ride follows a section of the Tasmanian Trail from Railton to Sheffield and is on an old railway line for most of the way.  As such the trail makes for fairly easy riding as it passes through surprisingly pleasant bushland, plantations and farmland.
Railton and Sheffield make great places to explore, as do Sykes Sanctuary and Stoodley Plantation along the way.

This route heads out from Derby to the top of Rattler Hill, before heading back down again on some crazy steep descents, flowing trails and challenging single track.  The best time to ride this route is as part of the Blue Dragon Race when the trails are well marked and cleared, but for those who want to take it at a more leisurely pace, anytime of year is good to ride this trail.  This ride is challenging and you'll climb a total of 1,600 metres (broken up in many stages) over its 53kms, but it is worth it, with great riding, lovely forest and river sections, a possible detour out to Mount Paris Dam and great views from the top of Rattlers Hill as its reward.

Also called the OC track in some guides, this is one of the 'old school' trails in the Blue Tier area.  The actual track is 7kms of beautiful, but sometimes rough and rutted, trail dropping 450 metres from Jubilee Hill down to the bottom of the Weldborough Pass near Moorina.  It passes through beautiful forest, but you might not notice that so much as you enjoy the sweeping, sometimes plunging, descents as you navigate your way over the many little obstacles on the way.  Even me, who doesn’t like doing the same trail twice in the same year, would be happy for someone to give me a lift back up to the top for a second go at this one.

Duration

Time (hrs)

Location

This route is mainly on gravel roads, but don't let that put you off as there's some great highlights along the way including a beautiful section of old trail running up along the Huon River which will have those who don't mind getting wet and muddy grinning from ear to ear.  Add to this a trip past the controversial Southwood site, a visit to Glovers Bluff, a walk out to Reuben Falls and of course starting and finishing at the Tahune Airwalk ... This is a good day out.

Those searching for mountain bike trails will be better served heading for nearby trails up the nearby East Risdon Hills or Meehan Ranges.

The Risdon Vale Trail is a short 2km XC loop built as part of a local initiative by the Risdon Vale Bike Collective and Blue Hill Trails. As it was built by young locals (under the guidance of a professional trail builder) it is a pretty solid achievement.

This is probably more a trail for local riders looking for some new trails or, rather than interstate or visiting riders. The Bike Park is pretty impressive and incorporates dirt jumps and a pump track

Snug Tiers (Grey Mountain and Pelverata Falls)

Key Statistics

Distance
25kms
Duration
Single Day
Time (hrs)
2-4 hours

Location

This ride ties together a couple of out and back rides to Grey Mountain and Pelverata Falls into a loop of sorts.   It is probably more for adventurous local riders who don't mind some rough tracks and who are looking for a short bit of technical riding with some nice views at the end.
However it can also make a great day out for less experienced riders just so long as you are willing to walk your bike a bit.  There are plenty of options to extend or shorten this ride for those looking for more or less hours in the saddle.

Sterling Valley Track

Key Statistics

Distance
21km (long loop) - 9km (short loop)
Duration
Single Day
Time (hrs)
1-4 Hours

Location

The heart of the Sterling Valley Track is a short, hard to find section of technical single trail which descends from the flanks of Mt Murchison down into Rosebery, however if you start back near Tullah and tackle the climb up as well, then you'll be treated to a lovely one way ride.  The route comes alive once every two years when the Wildside event is run, but otherwise it's sitting there waiting for those brave enough to try it.  It's a track best enjoyed during the later summer months when it may have dried out a bit.

Location

This route ties together some very easy cycling along the Ulverstone to Turners Beach cycleway and nearby backroads with the chance to go play on some pretty darn good singletrack in a mountain bike park on private land off Stubbs Road.  Some may wish to just do one or the other, but combined they make an enjoyable ride … Allowing you to stretch both your legs and your skills.

Tahune Airwalk Ride

Key Statistics

Distance
6km
Duration
Single Day
Time (hrs)
1 hour

Location

A 6km mountain bike loop has been constructed at the Tahune Airwalk, though only half of it is new single trail with the return journey mainly along gravel roads.  The  outward journey includes some fun riding through nice forest and alongside the river with chances to explore sites less visited by the crowds.

I do note that the official website lists the "Forest Bike Track" as being part of your General Admission to the site, so you may need to pay to access the trail (this wasn't the case last time I was there).
